Final: Lakers 103, Jazz 100 This one seems destined to go down to the wire. Both teams scored 29 points in the third. Luka has 39/7/8 on 14-26 FGs -- he's officially broken out of his slow start. AR has 18 points (5-10 FG). Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams have been huge.

    • Brian Kamenetzky: Heading into the season, most people, the hosts included, assumed Quentin Grimes would start. Instead, Ziaire Williams came back and was put in the lineup, and Matisse Thybulle started Wednesday and in the final preseason game. at 13:14
    • Andy Kamenetzky: Andy's analysis: against better defensive teams, starting Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle, who are not dynamic offensive players, puts too much on Luka, Austin and Kessler's scoring and limits the offense. at 17:10
    • Andy Kamenetzky: Matisse Thybulle played 23 minutes on Wednesday, which the host calls on the high side for him over the last few years. at 17:57
    • Andy Kamenetzky: Andy doubts Matisse Thybulle can handle starter's minutes. He grants that JJ could still start him while giving Grimes and Sexton equal or more minutes off the bench. at 17:40
    • Brian Kamenetzky: Brian says the Lakers were at their best on Wednesday when they turned the game by getting cheap points in transition. He says Matisse Thybulle has defensive value but is not a full-court pressure or leak-out transition player. at 19:07

  • Podcast The Athletic NBA Daily host · Analysis · around the league

Analysis: Kessler needs to be a top-three or top-four defensive center for the Lakers to be good enough, and point-of-attack defense is the big question. Ziaire Williams is better as a helper. Matisse Thybulle is miscast at the point of attack. Collin Sexton could maybe fill that role.

    • Andy Kamenetzky: Andy thinks Grimes is a better natural matchup for Steph Curry than Thybulle because of how Curry works off screens. He describes Thybulle as more of an off-ball disruptor, unless the Lakers put Ziaire Williams on Curry. at 29:52
    • A host says the Lakers will not be great defending on the ball but have many disruptors who get deflections, citing Williams and Thybulle. Kessler as rim protector lets them be aggressive. at 32:28

The other host argues that outside doubts about the defense are less about Kessler and more about everyone else. In his view, Matisse Thybulle has had trouble staying on the court, Ziaire Williams is unproven defensively, it has been a while since Grimes defended at the level being discussed, and Thiero is unproven.

    • A host watched the Lakers' starting lineup against the Nuggets on Friday night in the preseason. It had Matisse Thybulle as the fifth starter next to Luka, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler. at 9:56
    • A host does not think Matisse Thybulle should be the Lakers' fifth starter, citing spacing and offensive utility. The host grants his point-of-attack defensive upside. at 10:07
    • A host relays that Portland fans would point out Thybulle 'probably' shot about 38-39% from three last season on low volume. The host says he still isn't getting anyone to respect that shot. at 10:40
    • Per a host, in the preseason the Nuggets trapped Luka, leaving a Reaves-Kessler two-man game (Reaves). Ziaire Williams or Thybulle then had to hit threes. at 11:31
    • Both hosts prefer Zaire/ Ziaire Williams to Thybulle as the fifth starter. They cite his shooting being respected, his size and that he can help bring the ball up. at 10:48

    • In the preseason finale, the starters were the big three plus Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams. at 4:06
    • Host opinion: one host has doubts about Thybulle as the fifth starter. The reasons given are less offensive pop than Grimes and recurring injury concerns that make him impractical to plan around. The host still understands why Redick is intrigued. at 15:47
    • Host analysis: there is logic to starting Thybulle because he spots up around the perimeter, and if he hits shots at a high enough rate he will not wreck the spacing. However, he will not add paint touches. The host prefers four perimeter players who can get into the paint, playing as athletic a lineup as possible. at 17:29
