    • In most of the first two games, Brown's second unit has been Nolan Traore, Noah Clowney, Chaney Johnson and Moritz Wagner. at 15:26
    • Host's analysis: the second unit plays Johnson at the four and Clowney at the three, with two point guards. He says none of Traore, Clowney, Johnson or Wagner shot above 33% from three last season, so there isn't enough spacing for Brown. at 15:54
    • Chaney Johnson played a significant role and closed the game, a change from his debut, when he played only five minutes before being pulled. He had 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting. at 31:10
    • Johnson had three offensive rebounds and a backcourt steal while pressuring James Harden. at 31:51
    • Josh Minott played nine minutes late in the game and had 4 points and 2 rebounds. The host thinks he should play more and that the minutes are probably a choice between him and Johnson. at 32:50

    • Erik Slater: Chaney Johnson was in the opening-day rotation and had what Slater calls a 'pretty awful' season opener. Slater infers the team clearly likes him, or he wouldn't be in the rotation. at 20:02
    • Egor Demin (reported): Slater relays that Egor Demin said unprompted during training camp that Chaney Johnson will be a standard-contract player. Slater adds that converting Johnson would force the Nets to cut or trade someone else. at 20:02

    • Chaney Johnson played about four or five minutes. The speaker (not identified) said it won't work offensively next to Sharpe and Wagner because Johnson lacks shooting, ball handling and wing skills. at 18:45
    • Chaney Johnson and Josh Minott compared: one speaker said Johnson is not clearly the better defender overall, though both agreed Johnson is the better rebounder and more physically stout. One speaker would trust Johnson over Minott for short stretches at the five. One speaker holds Minott in high regard as a potentially very disruptive defender. at 19:19

I spoke about this on a recent pod: Chaney Johnson is a tough sell playing alongside Day'Ron Sharpe or Moe Wagner. I like what he offers as a defender and rebounder, but he's very limited in terms of wing skills on offense. It's looked clunky thus far when he's out there.

Chaney Johnson played with the second unit early in the game but logged only five minutes. The host said he is too limited offensively alongside centers.

    • The second-unit lineup has been Moritz Wagner at center, Chaney Johnson at the four and Clowney mostly at the three. at 15:44
    • Five players are competing for the backup forward spots. Clowney and Chaney Johnson have had those minutes from the start, with Danny Wolf, Josh Minott and Joshua Jefferson behind them. at 16:09

    • Host says the roster has a lot of size and length that supports an aggressive, turnover-forcing defense. He cites guards Mikel Brown Jr, Keon Ellis and Nolan Traore, and forwards Egor Demin, MPJ, Randle, Josh Minott, Clowney and Chaney Johnson. at 8:16
    • Host thinks Chaney Johnson is the Nets' best third-string center option, ahead of Grant Nelson and Danny Wolf. He does not really envision Wolf as a center. at 17:27
    • The Nets played Chaney Johnson at center at the end of his rookie season and in summer league, and the host says he looked capable there. at 18:20
    • Chaney Johnson (also) has been running with the second unit in the preseason, and the host says he looks like he has a rotation role to start the season. at 18:48
    • Erik Slater: The Nets have Chaney Johnson playing power forward in the second unit alongside traditional centers Sharpe and Wagner. at 22:56
    • Jordi Fernandez (reported): Asked by the host at the last practice, Jordi Fernandez disagreed that Chaney Johnson is a limited floor spacer. He said Johnson can play perimeter spots or center spots. at 23:35
    • Host thinks Chaney Johnson's limited floor spacing could be detrimental on offense when he plays alongside Sharpe or Wagner, though he can help defensively and in transition. at 24:19
    • Host thinks he took five threes in four preseason games. at 25:05

In the third quarter Miami showed two defenders on Mikel Brown Jr. on three ball screens. Each time he hit the open roller with a pocket pass. The plays led to a Noah Clowney three, a Moritz Wagner layup, and a Wagner-to-Chaney Johnson alley-oop.

    • Host says Clowney seems to be a lock for the rotation. Chaney Johnson is battling Josh Minott and Wolf for the final forward spot, and right now Johnson seems to have earned it, though the host says we'll see if it sustains. at 26:16
    • Host sees the case for Chaney Johnson as the most physically imposing of the group: defensive versatility (guards 1 through 5), some rim protection and rebounding. The offensive cost is that he isn't a floor spacer or ball handler. He has made one three in the preseason, "or maybe two", and is mainly a play finisher and offensive rebounder. at 27:06
    • Host says Fernandez and the coaching staff clearly feel Chaney Johnson has earned the spot, and the front office clearly likes him. This is the host's read, not a reported quote. at 27:50

    • Jordi Fernandez (quoted): Jordi Fernandez on Johnson: versatility, multi-positional, really strong, can guard multiple positions. He played more of the five today (vs. Philadelphia) and more of the four against Charlotte. at 6:30
    • Jordi Fernandez (quoted): Fernandez says Johnson had a very good summer league and camp, and that his intensity and physicality are something the team needs. He adds that nothing is guaranteed and the team is competing for minutes. at 6:53
    • Egor Demin (reported): Demin told the host there is a running debate in the locker room over who is stronger, Day'Ron Sharpe or Chaney Johnson. at 5:09
    • The host calls Johnson's defense and hustle very impressive and says he was a menace defensively in Thursday's game against the 76ers. at 3:50
    • Physical profile per the host: 6'7", 235 pounds, near 7-foot wingspan. The host says this lets Johnson guard multiple positions. at 4:13
    • Johnson has mostly been a power forward or wing, but was played out of position at center late in his rookie year and in summer league. The host says he picked it up fast. at 5:37
    • The host calls Johnson a tweener: he can play some center but not full-time. The host doubts he has the size for full-time center. at 14:21
    • The host looked up Johnson's combined numbers: across his last two Auburn seasons, rookie NBA and G League play, Summer League and two preseason games, he has shot 56% from the field. at 16:21
    • He hit a three against the 76ers on Thursday. at 17:11
    • The host is not sure Johnson will be a full-fledged rotation player this season and calls it very much up in the air. He says Johnson may be leading some players the Nets invested more in. at 10:27
    • The host says a standard contract conversion for Johnson will be a conversation pretty soon if he keeps playing like this. at 8:07

    • At summer league, the host and Lucas Kaplan said Johnson might be the Nets' second-best rookie behind Egor Demin. The host is unsure that will prove true. at 8:37
